STRAWBERRY PLASTICULTURE SYSTEM

2007

Increased yields, earliness, an extended harvest season and quality are available to strawberry growers using the plasticulture system. By planting greenhouse grown plugs in the early fall, growers will notice a dramatic difference in production and quality.   Strawberries are planted through plastic mulch in double rows at densities of @17,400 plants per acre on fumigated, raised beds. In winter months, a row cover is used to protect plants from winter damage.

VARIETIES AVAILABLE:

Tips are to be picked up mid-July to early September. Special arrangements can be made to ship the Tips.  Plugs are shipped mid August to late September.  Once an order is received, it takes 4 weeks to produce the strawberry plug.  All orders must be received by August 24, 2007.  Plugs are available while supplies last.

CHANDLER: Large, firm, sweet tasting berries. High yielding and vigorous.

SWEET CHARLIE: Large, firm, sweet tasting berries. 7 to 10 days earlier than the Chandler. Vigorous and disease tolerant.

Advantages of the Plasticulture System

Early Harvest
Two to three weeks earlier than the matted row system.
Quality Fruit
Our strawberry varieties for this system produce large,
attractive berries. Grown on plastic mulch, the berries never
touch the soil which means cleaner fruit for the customer. These varieties are great for Pick Your Own.
Less Maintenance
You do away with 3 months of caring for the plants by planting in the fall instead of the spring. Less time in the field means less chance for disease and insects to attack. Planting on plastic mulch aids in weed control eliminating undesirable foliage.
High Yields
Under the right conditions, as high as 25,000 lbs. per acre have been recorded locally.
Easy to Harvest
Large berries are easier to pick and fill containers faster. Raised beds mean less bending over therefore speeding the harvest process.
Labor
Costs are typically reduced as there is less weeding, no blossom removal and fruit is more easily and efficiently harvested.
