Rutgers finds leukemia-fighter in asparagus!

In a study conducted at Rutgers University, scientists discovered that extracts from the edible part of the asparagus plant demonstrated antitumor activity. Compounds found in asparagus shoots irreversibly inhibited the multiplication of leukemia cells, by preventing DNA and RNA synthesis. Dr. Chee-Kok Chin, chairman of Rutgers' plant science department, is very excited about the possibilities of this research.

Testimonials

"Jersey Male hybrids are usually more profitable than inexpensive seed by the first full season of harvest and continue to outperform inexpensive varieties during the life of the bed.  They offer growers the best value for their investment in seed or crowns."

"We purchased the Jersey Knight asparagus seed in 1991, and transplanted in 1992, during which the fern grew 5 to 6 feet tall. The following year, we decided to cut the grass for a couple of weeks. To our surprise we received over 1,000 pounds per acre. In 1994, we received over 4,000 pounds per acre in about 5 to 6 weeks, and in 1995 about 5,800 pounds per acre in 8 weeks. Each year we have received excellent grades on all the grass. We are very pleased with our decision to plant the Jersey Variety and to know the Walker brothers. They have been very helpful."

"We really like the Jersey Varieties. Their yields and quality are much better than the old Washington and Viking varieties. Customers enjoy their consistent spear size and wonderful appearance. Over the next 5 years we plan to replace all our existing varieties with Jersey Asparagus."
