Because asparagus is a long-term crop, it is important to choose a variety that will perform well for you throughout the years. Jersey Male Hybrid Asparagus varieties will live up to this challenge by giving the home gardener an overall advantage in higher yields, quality spears and a better taste. They have outperformed all others in nationwide studies and trials.
JERSEY SUPREME - The newest release. Higher yields, medium sized spears and a great taste are just some of its benefits. Like the Giant, this variety is also earlier and cold tolerant.SOLD OUTJERSEY KNIGHT - Our choice for the home gardener. This variety does very well in the warmer climates. The Knight has the best spear quality which makes it a favorite for the Roadside Markets.
SOLD OUTJERSEY GIANT - A popular choice for both the home gardener and the commercial grower. The Giant is tolerant to the colder climates. Its spears emerge approximately 7 to 10 days earlier than other varieties.
Advantages of male hybrids over male/female varieties:
HIGHER YIELDING - The Jersey male-hybrid varieties have consistently produced the highest yields by averaging 1/2 to 3/4 lbs per crown per harvest. This more than doubles the amount that the older male/female varieties produce. Based on this average, 25 crowns will yield approximately 15 to 20 lbs over a 6 to 8 week harvest period.
SPEAR QUALITY and TASTE - Today's consumers are very concerned with the taste and appearance of their asparagus. Studies have shown that the Jersey varieties have a uniform spear quality, an excellent appearance and a great taste.
DISEASE TOLERANT - Jersey Male Hybrids were specifically bred for their high tolerance to the major diseases that affect asparagus today: Fusarium Crown and Root Rot, Rust, and Cercospera.
LESS WEEDING - Female plants produce berries which grow into seedlings called "volunteers" or weeds. Once established, these seedlings attract insects, diseases and compete with the mother plant for nutrients and moisture. Male plants do not produce berries therefore they require much less weeding and chemical control.
